MHAB is next to Baxter State Park on Lake Matagamon near Patten, ME. We had seven scouts and three adults, and our guide on our trek. The staff gave us three trek options. We chose the option to canoe down the St. Croix river.
On the second day on the St. Croix, we went nearly 40 miles which had a lot of rapids and some dead water at the end. It was a lot of paddling. We also picked up a considerable amount of trash out of the river which included a lot of beer cans.
After the river, we hiked Mt. Katahdin. The mountain is the tallest peak in Maine. We hiked the Hunt trail which is the northern end of the Appalachian Trail and one of its hardest segments. On the way down we helped a hiker who had been stranded overnight off the mountain.
Every morning and evening, we used pots and pans to cook over an open fire. Each scout cooked a different day culminating in cocoa pancakes the final morning. At base the final night, we had their famous bean dinner.
We completed our trek by canoeing on Lake Matagamon and did some cliff jumping. In all we canoed 54 miles and hiked 11 miles to go 65 miles overall. We earned the 50 miler award.
